During the third season of Studio, we began testing our hunches about student-centered learning and took greater steps to position kids as teachers within our program. We established mentoring and internship opportunities for writers who expressed an interest in becoming teachers, and all writers assumed responsibility for reflecting on their learning throughout the year and determining how they might use what they learned to teach others. This was the first year that we hosted an Annual Celebration of Writing, where the writers and teachers in our program facilitated conversations and quick workshops on strategies, processes, resources, and discoveries that they made throughout the year.
We also began learning more about the use of high quality learning centers and their role within the writing classroom and the influence of criteria-specific feedback on the growth of the writer.
